The Clan MacTavish lives in a small fishing village off the coast of Scotland. When the last clan chieftain dies at sea, Margret, his only daughter, is appointed head of the family. Still only a young girl, Margret considers the new responsibilities a heavy burden. The only bright spot on the horizon is her pending nuptials to Jamie Campbell, a young sailor. However, Margret's new role means that she can longer marry a working-class man. Distraught, she heads for the coast, hoping the sea will take her life like it did her father's. As a pounding storm rages, Jamie follows Margret into the roaring surf, hoping to save the woman he loves before it is too late
Though considered by critics to be one of her best pictures, The Pride of the Clan nearly brought an end to Mary Pickford's career..and life! On November 12, 1916, Pickford, director Maurice Tourneur, and additional cast and crew were shooting the film's climactic scene when their boat spring a leak. Two cameras were lost as the schooner went down, and Tourneur had to rescue Mary after a rough wave knocked her unconscious. Much of the movie was shot in Fort Lee, New Jersey, with outdoor scenes filmed on the New England shore, doubling for the Scottish coast. Working titles included The Reeds of the Clan and Lass of Killean.
