Jacqueline Logan was a prominent star of the silent screen; she got her start in show business as a Ziegfeld dancer in New York. After some modeling, Logan was cast in A Perfect Crime (1921) directed by Allan Dwan; her most memorable role was as Mary Magdalene in Cecil B. DeMille's The King of Kings (1927). A prolific Broadway and film actor, Ian Keith played many villains throughout his film career, including John Wilkes Booth in D. W. Griffith's Abraham Lincoln (1930). He also starred in the epic films Queen Christina (1933), Cleopatra (1934) and The Ten Commandments (1956).

Dixie Evans, of the infamous Mowbray Gang, is on the lam after a post office robbery. In her desperate attempt to cross a nearby river in a canoe, she capsizes and is rescued by Dean Richardson, a wealthy doctor. The two fall in love and Dean proposes. Dixie requests that Dean never grill her about her past. However, Pete Mowbray has no intention of letting Dixie "go straight," an blackmails her. It doesn't take long for Dean to realize something's wrong with his new wife, and he sets out to learn the truth about who she is.
