This is an excellent Gaumont thriller. Lowe plays a devil-may-care American detective traveling abroad in France. During a costume party he finds a corpse in his hotel room, which conveniently disappears when he leaves to fetch the manager. When the body disappears, Lowe and Cummings are lead on a trail of death and destruction from France to the wilds of Scotland. The killer it seems, has a penchant for wrecking trains to remove his enemies. There are three brutal train wrecks in this film. The final wreck will leave your mouth agape and your eyes wide open. This is one of those mysteries where you think you know who the killer is but watch out! Lowe is wonderful as the snappy Yank detective while Cummings is delightful as his insurance investigator pal. This is also one of those films that is able to successfully blend both thrills and laughs. There are many moments of snappy dialogue that will leave you laughing out loud. A great film! From 35mm.
