What's stuntman Sonny Hooper's reaction when he learns the record for a fall is 223 feet? "I'll go 224," he says. Burt Reynolds plays Hooper, at work on The Spy Who Laughed at Danger. His wife (Sally Field) hopes it's his last film. The new stunt team member (Jan-Michael Vincent) prods him to try a risky rocket-car leap. Sonny intends to have the last laugh. The film's a natural for Reynolds, who broke into movies doing stunts, and for director Hal Needham (Smokey and the Bandit, Stroker Ace). "We created stunts that I once didn't believe possible," Needham says of this fond look at the men and women who risk their necks to make reel magic.
