Jeptha Marr's successful freight business has made him the most powerful man in the territory of Pawnee Kansas. When railroad man Stephen Bent arrives in town with plans to lay tracks, Jeptha realizes his gravy train is in serious danger. Determined to survive, he has gunman bully the rail workers and a bloody shooting war ensues. But a rival railroad owner, Champ Clanton is working behind the scenes to eliminate both Marr and Bent, and seize control of the town himself.
