Bandits Hightower, Fuerte, and Abilene flee from a posse across the unforgiving Arizona wasteland. In a lethal sandstorm, the outlaws come across a lone woman about to give birth. The mother dies during the delivery, but with her last words she makes the men promise to protect her child. Now, as the three hardened gunmen head to the town of New Jerusalem with a swaddled infant--retracing a pilgrimage taken 2,000 years ago through a desert in the Holy Land--each man undergoes a fundamental transformation.
